From Michael Lee, MS, TS, ELD (ABB): Director of Laboratories, Fertility Solutions
Keeping in mind the recent reports of problems with frozen storage at several clinics, I would like to let both our current and prospective patients know the following information:
24/7 Monitoring
Fertility Solutions embryo and semen storage tanks are continuously monitored 24/7 via local and remote access temperature monitors. The tank’s temperature probes are Wi-Fi enabled. If any changes in temperature are detected, the Lab Director and staff are instantly alerted, either in the office with alarms or on their cell phones by a specialized alert system.
In our tanks, the temperature probes are placed at the top level. If the alarms go off overnight, the levels will not fall low enough to cause damage to samples, as the embryos are stored in the lowest level with a large “buffer” of liquid nitrogen below the samples. We also have automatic liquid nitrogen systems in the embryo storage tanks which automatically start to fill the tanks when the levels fall. All tanks are physically monitored on a daily basis as well.
In the event of a power failure or blackout, Fertility Solutions has a battery backup and a gas-powered generator that immediately turns on and delivers power to ALL laboratory equipment – especially incubators and cryopreservation storage tanks. There is zero downtime between a power failure and battery/generator response.
