5 Free Fertility Apps for 2023

Posted In Ovulation

Aug 02 2023

Learning to predict your “fertile window” is one of the best things you can do if you’re trying to conceive a baby at home without invasive fertility treatment interventions. Identifying the most likely fertility windows, based on when you ovulate, requires tracking your menstrual cycle for several consecutive months.

Free Fertility Apps to Track Ovulation & Fertility

Tracking a menstrual cycle to predict when you ovulate or when you’re most likely to bleed is based on a few different factors:

  • How many days in your cycle (average is 24 to 35 days)
  • Changes in vaginal discharge (discharge becomes more like egg white consistency in the days leading up to ovulation)
  • Other symptoms correlated to hormone fluctuations, such as breast tenderness, abdominal/pelvic discomfort, temperature, headaches, libido, mood swings, etc.

Until 20 years ago or so, women relied on their paper calendars and period tracking memos to put these pieces together. Now, period and fertility tracking apps make it easier than ever to figure out when you’re most fertile; a lack of period regularity or signs of ovulation also provides essential clues, helping women know when they need an infertility consultation.

1. Amilia Period Tracker

If you’re just starting the period-tracking journey and are less interested in fertility at this point, we recommend starting with Amilia. This is a simple, easy-to-use period tracking app. It has extra bells and whistles if you want them, but it begins simply – allowing you to click on the days you have a period.

For women with a healthy reproductive history, this is all you need to learn more about when you have your period and when you’re most likely to ovulate – identifying any period irregularities (which are NEVER considered normal, by the way).

2. My Calendar

This free period tracking app from Android is straightforward. It allows you to input information about when you’re on your period, the flow quality from day to day (spotty, heavy, light, clots, etc.), and other period symptom details.

So, while advertised as a “period app,” My Calendar also highlights your fertile window, which often starts a few days before you ovulate.

2. GLOW Ovulation & Period Tracker

One of our complaints about most period and ovulation trackers is their inarguably feminine themes and interfaces. We appreciate the GLOW Ovulation and Period Tracking app because, besides providing accurate predictive data based on your symptoms input, the interface is more gender-neutral and unbiased, making it a more comfortable and inclusive fit for our LGBTQ+ patients.

We also appreciate that the GLOW app “grows” with you. Once you get pregnant, GLOW users can continue using their GLOW Nurture (prenatal) and GLOW Baby apps to continue tuning in to what’s happening for you and your baby.

3. Clue Period & Ovulation Tracker

The Clue Period & Ovulation Tracker is another popular option. If you experience irregular periods, we recommend using Clue, which is better for tracking patterns for more irregular menstrual cycles. Women with conditions like PCOS or endometriosis find Clue helpful for identifying partners that might stump other apps designed for women with regular cycles.

The free version is all most women need. However, if you have irregular periods or are interested in monitoring other health concerns, you can invest in the premium version.

5. Flo

If you’re concerned about security and privacy, Flo may be your best free fertility app option. Flo is the first period and ovulation tracker to meet world-class security standards. They promise never to share your information with any other platform.

In addition to accurate period and ovulation predictions, Flo provides access to evidence-based medical articles, tips, and recommendations designed to improve your health – all curated by M.D.s.

Share Fertility App Info with Your Gynecologist or Fertility Specialist

OB/GYNs and fertility specialists always appreciate looking at our patients’ fertility apps information, so make sure to share the information at your next appointment.

Do you feel your fertility app information indicates irregularities, or something might be wrong? Have you tried unsuccessfully to get pregnant for six months or longer? It might be time to schedule a fertility consultation at Fertility Solutions.
